WOODEN HOUSE DESTROYED. AUCKLAND, May 5. • A y° us ed by the glare of a burning hour® in Church street, Avondale, early this morning, a neighbour rushed into the “mi and fiaved two small children. lhe house, a five-roomed wooden structure, was owned and occupied by Air Alaik Borich, who has been away from home at Cambridge for the last month, everything was in order when Airs Borich went to bed last evening. She was awakened by the roar of the flames, and orc £ d to escape in her night attire. lhe flames already were bursting through the windows qs the fire brigade arrived, and the roof almost immediately ten in with a crash. Two leads of hose were played on the flames, and, aided by a good water pressure, in less than half an hour the blaze was extinguished. The house, however, was in ruins, only the chimneys and charred walls remaining. Nothing was saved except a chest of drawers containing a few clothes. Both the house and contents are insured.

CHEESE FACTORY BURNED DOWN. PALMERSTON N„ May 5. A fire at 8 o’clock this morning destroyed the cheese factory of the Raugiotu Co-operative Dairy Company at Rangiotu. It is estimated that cheese of the value of £l5O was destroyed. Hie building and contents were insured.

Mav 5 Owing to a grass fire on the hillside at Sumner yesterday seven houses were in danger of destruction, and only after a stiff fight was the local fire brigade, assisted by cadet?, able to quell the flames. One house caught alight at the corner, and others were scorched.
