AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By

Digger.

T. George received a couple of additions to his team. One is a two-year-old filly by Tea Tray from Jolie Princess, and the other a three-year-old filly by Romeo from Thurnlcy. Tho former is owned by Mr W. Burrott and the latter by Mr J. D Jones. Adjuster was brought to Ellerslie to bo. schooled during the week, his display being a first-class one for a novice. He has the size and speed to make a really good hurdler. The objection lodged against King Mcrv at Avondale by the owner of Titree did not take lon<>- to decide, and it was dismissed without hesitation, the committee being of opinion that it was without grounds. King Mcrv was always in front of Titree, and his rider committted no breach of the rules whatever. i ne Hawke’s Bay youngsters Bttlalo and Monetye, now trained at Ellerslie, are a very promising pair. The former is tho more forward, and he has only to reproduce Ellerslie form to show up at To Rapa on Saturday. When Peketahi fell at Avondale C. Hastings sustained a broken collarbone. Thu young rider does not have much luck, bnt> like others he may get .. turn before long. E. Stanway, a successful horseman over hurdles and country, was to leave for Melbourne on Monday. He has an engagement with the Victorian trainer B. Price, and, like other New Zealanders who have gone to Victoria in the past, he should do well. The disappointing Antonive is back again with P. Conway, but he seems a hopeless case, although his condition is quite satis-’ factory. Marble Mount and Royal Trek were among the novices schooled during the week. The latter is a green horse by Royal Soult, who shows considerable promise. During the holidays Rahepato has built up splendidly. That he has not forgotten hov.' to jump he showed by clearing tlye big hurdles in fine style on Thursday. With a dearth of good hurdlers in the north Rahepato should continue to be a payable proposition. Since his noteworthy’ second after being left at Pukekohe. two failures are down against Modest Boy. Some excuse has been advanced for bis defeat at Avondale, and it may’ be fully justified when the Some Boy II gelding appears at Te Rapa. He is one of the best hacks in the north, and is quite genuine. After two public outings, Royal Tea won at his third attempt since being recommissioned. His good showing on the first day at Avondale prepared backers for his second day victory. He was cut back nearly last in a big field, and then finished in brilliant style to win easily. Royal Tea is a classy sprinter, who will again be in strong demand at Te Rapa. King Merv has struck form, and being a fine weight carrier should go on to further successes. He is due to make his next appearance on his home track at Te Rapa. Valkon has been racing very unluckily. He would have beaten In the Shade with a little better fortune on the second day at Avondale, and as he is a consistent fellow his turn may not be much longer delayed. Newbury was among those lost in th§ bunch in the Chevalier Handicap last week. He bad little chance from barrier rise,

but he ia likely to prove that form all wrong at the earliest opportunity. Ripon Abbey and Potoanui are both brilliant hurdicre over a mide and a-half, and they likely to dispute favouritism on the first day at Te Rapa. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. AVONDALE RACES. Once over, an interesting race saw Vexatious win by half a length from Mount Marta, who beat Braeman by a similar margin. Kilburn was right un fourth, and then a gap to Ngata and Chrissarto. There was nothing much between the first four horses, but both Kilburn and Braeman should have done better.

Moa Bird was a good favourite for the hack sprint (the Lockwood Handicap), aud, with Vigilance, carried the bulk of the pool. Moa Bird was slow away, Orcadqp, Le Champ. Desert Lad. and Valuator comprising the leading division to the four furlongs, where Callanmore ran up fast and led round the turn into the straight. Here the rear division moved forward, and Moa Bird hit the front a furlong froni home. Moutoa Wonder came at her over the concluding stages, but Moa Bird won by half a length. Cimabue won by half a length from The Hawk, with Raasay just over a length back. Thaw was a good fourth, and then came Miss Ransom and Freehold. Kaihoro began very quickly and was soon clear of the bunch headed by High Disdain. Knightlike, and Silver Rule. First Acre, who pushed through on the -,’ils. was a close fourth, and then came Broad Acre, Dobbin, and Kaiti Miss Pat was responsible for a fine performance, as she was last throe furlongs from home and then won going away. NOTES ON THE RACING. WELLINGTON, April 21. Olympic and Bonhomme were the favourites for the Hurdles. Lady Passenger made the running till the back stretch, where Bonhomme took the lead. Entering the straight he was attended by Lady Passenger and Panorama, but here Polyphemus. swept up from the rear and went on to jump the last fence first and win by three lengths, while Panorama got up to beat Lady Passenger by a short head. Modern was fourth, and then came Bonhomme. Polyphemm smothered the opposition for pace and won with a lot in hand. Bonhomme. Modern, and Olympic jumped poorly. Inflame and Waihemo were the favourites for the Maiden. They were in front with Freeze Out to the straight, and then Freeze Out and Inflame drew away.. Freeze Out -winning by half a length. Tatrina was three lengths back third, with Second Thought fourth and Fair One next. They were a poor lot. In * four-horse race for the Hack Mile, Court Jester was the favourite and Holus Bolus and Borsaline were well backed. Borsalene led at a slow pace from Holus Bolus and Court Jester. At the halfmile Reed increased the pace on Borsalene. and thereafter was never in danger of defeat, winning by three lengths, with a similar distance between second and third. Court Jester was short of work owing to a poisoned foot. Oratrix was a red-hot favourite for the Cup from Ring Boy, Joy Bird, and Kilmiss. Ring Boy and Vesperus. made the running from Twink and Joy Bird, with Oratrix in the rear. There was —little change till nearing the straight, where Ring Boy and Vesperus were, still in front of Joy Bird, with Oratrix moving forward. Once in line, Ring Boy ■was beaten by Vesperus. Over the last furlong Oratrix challenged strongly, hut Vesperus responded and won by half a length.- Ring Boy was three lengths away, with Beaumont fourth, -followed by Kilmiss and Joy Bird. Oratrix.'got into ■ trouble once during the - running, but Vesperus was going just as well at the post. - According to the betting the Two-year-oid Handicap was a one-horse race and «o it proved. Royal Duke being in front from start to finish, and winning wit’ the greatest ease bv four lengths. Rio de Vai a half-brother to Degace. stayed on just too well for Stanchion, and beat him by a neck for second. Tcheka was fourth, and then came First Ruler and Mount Shannon. Royal Duke outclassed nts opponents. For the Opawa Hack Handicap the Keddar-Kindle bracket was a strong order There was little between the five nil the wa v to the straight, with Fallow and Exhibition in the lead. Once in line Keddar shot ahead, with Billion and Maui challenging. Keddar beat Maui bv half a length, Billion being another half’length off clear of Kindle and Exhibition. Billion might have won but for interference through crossing in the straight. For the sprint First Acre and Kilperon were equally backed. Quantum and Singlespear led to the course proper from Kilperon. Dobbin, and First Acre. Once in line Filperon came on, and all out neat First Acre by half a length. Royal Ceres was the best part of a length away, witn Singlespear fourth, and then came Dobbin and Miss Pat. There was a great-finish in the concluding event- between the favourites Catkin and Moutoa Wonder, and Helotis. The judge could not separate Catkin and Helotis. Moutoa Wonder was unlucky to miss his eye. ASHBURTON TROTTING MEET ■■• INC. Saturday, April 21.
