PUPIL TO PRINCIPAL.

AUCKLAND, March 28. The appointment of Mr H. J. D. Mahon, 8.A., at present acting-head-master of the Auckland Grammar School, as headmaster, was made at a meeting of the Board of Governors (report-sour special correspondent). The vacancy had been created by the death of Mr J. Drummond. At one time Mr Mahon was a pupil of the school, and he is the second old boy to rise from pupil to principal, Mr Drummond being the first. Born 54 years ago, Mr Mahon was first associated with the Auckland Grammar School ,as a junior district scholar in September, 1886. Subsequently, he passed into the Auckland University College, where, in 1892, he was elected to an entrance scholarship zupart from gaining his B.A. degree, Mr Mahon did considerable post-graduate work both in Auckland - and abroad. In Latin, English, German, and French he studied well beyond the requirements of the degree. As a teacher Mr Mahon has had a varied experience. In 1892-93 he was junior assistant at Wellesley Street School, and from 1894 to 1896 he was assistant master at New Plymouth High School. From 1897 he was teaching at the Auckland Grammar School, and was English and commercial master until 1906. when he was given leave of absence to pursue his studies in Europe. Returning a year later, be taught as seniol English master at the Grammar School. He was appointed'head of the English department and second master in 1921.
