RED CROSS SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting of the Red Cross Society was held on Friday afternoon. Mr E. A. Rosevear occupied th e chair, la Bev. V. G. Bryan King being compelled to retire from the meeting owin'* to indisposition. The chairman and members extended a very hearty welcome home to Ladv Ferguson, who had been abroad for the past 12 months. 1 A report from Sister Kirkpatrick showed that peace time activities for the new. year were well under way. The Junior Red Cross circles were evincing enthusiasm, and the movement was gradm ally widening. Sister Kirkpatrick attended and supplemented her report. It was decided to refer several matters touched upon to the Joint Peace Council. Mr Rosevear said that members recognised Sister Kirkpatrick’s zeal for the work, and trusted that she would not overtax herself. A letter was received from Miss Williams, at present in England. The secretary was requested to reply warmly reciprocating the message of goodwill.' Headquarters forwarded reports from Sister Christian, Canterbury, and Sister Corkill, Taranaki. The reports revealed continued activity in peace time work in these districts. In relieving a number of cases of distress a pleasing feature was the assistance rendered, in kind, by those who sympathised with the work and aims of the Red Cross. ) Th© committee was very pleased to receive a letter of acknowledgment from an ex-soldier, who had received assistance. The following is an extract: “ I wish to thank you warmly for numerous benefits and many kindnesses. I and my family appreciate and will ever remember th© untiring efforts of the Red Cross in the interests of ex-soldiers.” A statement was received from Miss Aitken. Gore, of the disbursements with respect to comforts supplied to soldier patients in Gore Hospital. It was resolved that the statement be received with thanks, that a further sum be remitted, and that Miss Aitken be specially thanked for her services to the Red Cross and the men in hospital. The matron at Montecillo furnished a satisfactory report. There were 10 patients in the home. The men were grateful for a number of gifts received. For the Montecillo Committee, Miss Rattray and Miss Graham confirmed the matron’s report. Everything was in order and working smoothly. Miss Graham moved that Mr C- B. Smith be added to the Montecillo committee. This was seconded by Mrs Roberts, and carried unanimously. In reply to Lady Ferguson it was men, tioned that further patients would be admitted to Montecillo. In regard to Pleasant Valley Sanatorium, it was reported that the society supplied comforts at regular intervals, and in some deserving cases clothing had been supplied. Some provision had also been made for entertainments, and in thk connection it was left with Mrs Roberts and Mr Smith to further matters on behalf of the society. Mrs Roberts reported that the billiard table at Wakari required attention. It was resolved that the matter be attended to. A satisfactory financial statement, submitted by Mr Rosevear, was adopted. Lady Ferguson, stated that General Champain was delighted with his tour through New Zealand. His reception in the Dominion was the most cordial he had experienced, and his wife, daughters, and he would carry away happy memories of their visit to .this country. Lady. Ferguson moved that Miss M'Lean (one of., the trustees of the society) be added to the Executive Committee. This was seconded by Miss Graham and carried unanimously. .
