SWIMMING

OLYMPIC APPEAL CARNIVAL Standing room only was the order at the Municipal Baths on Saturday night, when the Otago Swimming Centre staged its Olympic appeal carnival. Realising that the carnival was for the purpose of augmenting the fund’ to cover the expenses of the New Zealand athletes' chosen- to compete at the forthcoming Olympiad, swimming enthusiasts attended in fore,,, and, although the extra seating .ccomniodation at the baths was not called into Use, .there was an attendance of 80V at a very conservative estimate. A lengthy programme, which -included several novelty events, was carried outwithout a hitch, and throughout the racing was particularly keen. Miller, which gave the Dunedin public the last chance ol seeing her in action before her departme for Amsterdam. Unfortunately, she was compelled to swim in- no fewer than four sprints in less than a quarter of an hour, and certainly was not seen at her best excepting her heat of the 33-1-3 Yards Dash Handicap, which she put behind her fin the remarkably fast time Of 18sec.
