BOWLING

OTAGO v. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. At the Balmacewan green on Tuesday afternoon Otago defeated South Australia by 80 points to 69 in a representative four-rink game. Otago won two of the rinks, South Australia won one. and the remaining one was drawn. Dull and threatening weather prevailed throughout the afternoon, with the result that the attendance of spectators was limited to those who were directly interested in the match. The green was in good condition, but a strong and bitingly cold wind interfered to a certain extent with the bowling, and made things rather unpleasant for those who took part. The match was, however, a particularly interesting one, and at least two of the rinks were closely contested and very exciting. Play commenced at 2.30 p.m„ and prior to the throwing up of the jack for the first time the visiting team was welcomed by Mr D. M. Fastier, president of the Dunedin Bowling Centre, who expressed the hope that the stay of the Australian bowlers in Dunedin would be enjoyable in every way. The tour of the South Australian team through New Zealand had been a highly successful one, and its members were to be congratulated on winning five of the matches they had played. * Air E. W. Castine, manager of the touring team, replied oil behalf of the South Australian bowlers The tour, he said, had been a most enjoyable one, and he was certain that the cordial welcome they had received in Dunedin was the prelude to another happy period. He was particularly pleased with the arrangements that had been made for the tour, and these had resulted in all tunctions and fixtures being carried out smoothly and without bustle. In conclusion, he assured his hosts that the team had seen and enjoyed a great deal of the country, besides which it had been treated to a really good time. The play during the afternoon consisted of four official rinks and one unofficial rink, in which the members of the visiting party who were not taking part in the representative match were met by an Otago rink. Progress results during the afternoon were as follow: —Fifth head—South Australia 23, Otago 15; tenth head, 49—32; fifteenth head, 53—53; twenty-first head, 69 —80.
