DROWNING ACCIDENT.
TWO BATHERS LOSE THEIR LIVES. WELLINGTON, March 26. While bathing at Titahi Bay yesterday afternoon a young man named J. Pope was drowned in attempting unsuccessfully to rescue a young woman named Miss Downey, whose body has not been recovered. The victims of the accident got out of their depth, and, with a Miss Skews, were carried towards open water. Four men - ent to rescue, and one got hold of Miss Downey, but she slipped from his grasp. Miss Skews narrowly missed sharing the fate of her friends. The rescuers managed to drag. Pope to shore, but all efforts to restore him failed, though a number of doctors were on the scene, and also a nurse,' who gave great assistance. Mr Templeton, the stepfather of Miss Downey, noticed something going on on the beach, and helped with the improvised life ’ine for some time in ignorance of who were endangered, till Pope’s body was carried past him Ward, one of the rescuers, almost came to grief, and was much distressed. At sunset an object ~was seen far out, and a launch went off, but only' found Miss Downey’s bathing cap.
