IMPORTANT ADDITIONS. NEW PLYMOUTH, April 1. Additions to the North Egmont Hos telry in the form of a commodious new lounge and minor improvements, costing £1970, were officially opened yesterday by Mr W. Nosworthy, Minister in Charge of the Tourist Department. The Minister complimented the people of New Plymouth for guaranteeing and actually subscribing a large part of. the cost, culminating in the formation of a company, and the sum of £lO,OOO being subscribed to carry out improvements, and also to popularise the mountain resort by laying out lawn tennis courts, erecting a billiard room, and in stalling a wireless.set.. The Minister a’so expressed pleasure at the progress of the new mountain road winding through four miles of beautiful bush, which is being re laid and bituminised right up to the hostel to carry two-way traffic. The attention of the Minister was drawn to the present grave menace of goats owing to their depredations, and the fear was expressed that the whole of the Egmont National Park forest was doomed unless drastic action was taken. The Minister said he had been informed that it was practically impossible now to eradicate the goats, the only solution being to wage constant war on them with men and trained dogs Mr. Nosworthy said he would do his best to impress the Government with the seriousness of the matter.
