NEWS IN BRIEF.

It was stated at a meeting of the board of the Hamilton Technical High School last week that of 83 boys who left at the end of last year 31 have taken up farming.

Devotees of the game of bridge receievd a rude shock in Nelson last Friday night. A large party was in progress at a certain house, when the fire alarm was heard and it was discovered that the upper storey of the house was wrapped in flames. Several promising no-trump hands were flung away and the party stampeded for tho" street just as the fire brigade arrived. It subsequently transpired that the outbreak originated in an upstair 3 bedroom, where the ladies of the party had deposited their wraps. A gas jet had been left burning and it is thought that one of the curtains came in contact with the flame.

One of the cicw of an improvised armcured tank came to grief on the occasion of the recent naval demonstration at Samoa. In recording the incident, the Samoa Guardian says: “ One sailor was unfortunate euough to tumble off the contraption when rounding the corner near the Central Hotel. His injuries were a broken limb.’ The armoured car was built out of sheet iron, placed round the top of a motor- lorry. There wore a few little peepholes on the sides. Later the “ tank’ was used to give some of the members of the Mau a joyride to Vainiea.” The practice of certain people of making up parties in cars and going out shooting at night with the aid of the lights of the cars was raised by the Wairara.pa representative at a meeting of the Acclimatisation Society in Wellington last Wednesday (reports the Evening Post). He stated that considerable annoyance was being caused to the people of South Wairarapa by the practice, and asked what the council thought about it. It was pointed oui that this was a matter for the local authorities to deal with, as it was a breach of the regulations, but whatever action the Wairarana branch took would be fully sup ported by the Wellington Society.
