FLIGHT ACROSS PACIFIC.

CAPTAIN KINGSFORD SMITH’S . PROJECT. WELLINGTON. March 12. A passenger from Sydney by the Makura, which arrived at Wellington today from San Francisco, is Mr K. Anderson. who is returning to Australia with a view to making financial arrangements in ■connection with a flight across the Pacific by Captain Kingsford Smith. The flight has not been definitely abandoned, and it is hoped that with lock a fresh start will be made by the party about May 1 Mr Anderson expressed confidence that the Pacific would be flown in the near future. “ The Pacific i s going to be flown this year by several nations,” he said, “ but whether we shall do it remains to be seen.”

The machine in which it is-proposed to make the flight is a three~motored Fokker, There are. three Whirlwind ” . engines,~ which are capable of developing 220 h.p. each. Any one engine is capable of keeping the machine in the air without altitude being lost. The plane is equipped with " valves, so that in case of accident the gasoline can be easilv discharged and the machine left with 200ga] of fuel, which will be sufficient to keep it in the air for four or five hours, using only one engine.
