xhe first egg fruit known to Invercargill was sold m an auction mart last Wednesday (says the Southland Times). The consignment was forwarded from Nelson and attracted considerable attention from retailers. Egg fruit is a product of the countries of the Mediterranean and although something of a novelty to Inver-cargill,-is keenly sought after in northern centres, where it is better known. Its shape suggests an elongated egg (hence the name), three times the size of an average egg. It bears a wine-coloured skin, similar in substance to the cucumber, and is not unlike the cucumber in flesh. Egg fruit is treated and dished similar to the fried mushroom and is regarded as a narti•sjjlarly delectable dish.
