Fhere is said to be good authority for tno story that a party of Wairarapa visitors to Wellington found themselves in the wrong place altogether when they set out not long ago to inspect the Newtown Zoo (says the Age). Proceeding by car the party entered a long drive, and one of its members observed that this looked like the place, there being plenty of trees about. At the top of a rise, however, the car was halted by a severe-looking person who de-s-red to be informed where its occupants ♦bought they were going to. “To the Zoo,” he was, told. “This is not the Zoo,” he said with unabated severity, “ this is Government House.” The Wairarapa party then loft.

A suggestion has been made that the Auckland City Council should acquire a eomnatatively small area of land, consisting of three sections, on the southern boundary of The Cascades, the name of a fairly extensive area sloping to the Waitakere River, where there is a magnificent piece of kauri forest (says the Auckland Star). The sections are situated on the top of One of the ridges and have been farmed 111 . a . small way. It is contended that acquisition of the land in question would enable a fire break to be made, o-ne that would separate the kauri forest from other portions of the city reserves in the locality. During the past summer there were grave fire risks in the Waitakores, and a report for future guidance has been prepared for the council. . •
