LAUNCH IN FLAMES.
HELP ARRIA’ES IN NICK OF TIME. NELSON. March 6. A tragedy was narrowly averted at Admiralty Bay last evening when Johnnio Mokau and his wife and child were returning from Pelorus Sound to their home on d’Urville Island. The south-easter had freshened, and as tho launch was heavily laden, Mokau decided to stay the night at Guards. He had turned towards the bay when the engine backfired, and the launch was soon a mass of flames. The three bad to jump overboard, and tho father, who is a strong sw'immcr. supported the child. Their cries were heard, but tho Guards’ launch was not in working order, and Turners, in the next bay, were telephoned to. Mr Henry Guard put off in a dinghy and was just in time to catch Mrs Mokau by the hair as she was sinking. The Turners tried to tow the burning launch ashore, but it gave a plunge forward and sank. Mokau was somewhat burnt in trying to extinguish the flames.
