EASTERN DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS. . The Eastern District championship singles and doubles were played on the Mataura Club’s green on Wednesday. The weather was dull but fine, and a slight wind did not interfere with play. There was a good attendance of members of the various clubs in the Eastern District to witness some very interesting play, which resulted as follows:— SINGLES. First Round. Preece (Gore) 23 beat Papps (Edendale) 12. Second Round. J. Buchanan (Mataura) 19 beat Leishman (Hokonui) 14. Preece (Gore) 18 beat Traynor (Wyndham) 12. Final. Preece (Gore) 24 beat J. Buchanan (Mataura) 15. On the 7th head Buchanan trailed the kitty to lie three, which .gave him a lead of one. In the next head Preece put on 3 and followed with a 4 and a 1. the 11th head showing him 6 in the lead. On the 16th head Preese lay 4, which gave him the substantial lead of 13. and after the final head the scores read: Preece 24, Buchanan 15. ’ DOUBLES. First Round. Bennettn and Kerse (Wyndham) 18 beat M'Gill and Perks (Gore) 17. Second Round. Bennetto and Kerse (Wyndham) 16 beat Hawthorne and Ellingham (Edendale) 14. W. Buchanan and Calder (Mataura) 28 beat 'Thomson and Smith (Hokonui) Final. W. Buchanan and Calder (Mataura» 27 beat Bennett and Kerse (Wyndham) 23. The Wyndham players started off well and scored seven in the first three heads, while the Mataura men had scored 11 up to the Sth head. At the finish of the 12th head the scores stood: Mataura 13, Wyndham 12. Mataura scored nine in the next three heads, which gave them a lead of 10, and on the 19th head the scores were 27—16 in favour of Mataura. In the last two heads "Wyndham scored a three and a four, and the game finished: Mataura 27, Wyndham 23.
