J he Otago Centre is in the fortunate position this season of being able to offer no fewer than five cups for competition in sprint events, distance events, field events, relay races, and cycling races respectively. Each cup will be held for a year by the •winner of the most points during the season. It is impossible to say at present who will eventually be the winners, as the contest for each cup is very close, but it can be stated that those who are in the leading positions are as follows: — Moody Cup, for sprint events. —McLachlan, Bastings, W. J. Duff. S. F. Dunean. Milne Cup, for distance events. —Murphy, Morris, Wood, M'Kernan. Greenslade Cup, for field events. —J. W. Johnson, Provo, Ward, Wright. The fields in the ladies’ events at the last meeting in Wellington were particularly good, in fact, they were the largest Been at an electric light meeting at the Basin Reserve. M. R. Spillane, of Palmerston, who secured admission to the ranks of the amateurs . recently, has been putting in some practice in throwing the hammer, and is rapidly getting into good form. Followers of the sport are looking forward to seeing him figuring in competition very shortly. When Stanley Lay threw the javelin 209 ft 7min recently the distance was not measured by a surveyor, as a record could not be granted owing to the fact that the meeting was not a registered one (says the Taranaki Herald), but the officials who measured the distance arrived at the above result. Lay threw eight times, and, at the fifth attempt the javelin landed just past the flag marking the record. The annual athletic championships of the Canterbury amateur country clubs were held at Timaru in fine weather. The 100 Yards Championship was won by K. R. Johnstone, with J. H. Russell second and S. The High Jump and Long Jump Championships were both won by Malcolm, who beat J. C. Abernethy in the former event and Delwry in the latter. The Hop, Step, and Jump title was secured by Abernethy with Delwry second. M. Leadbetter and W. F. Deady filled first and second places in the 120 Yards and 220 Yards Handicaps. N. J. Suckling had no trouble in winning the Mile Handicap from scratch in 4min 46 3-ssec, and he plac»d another _ win to his credit in the Half-mile Handicap, in which he started from 15yds. Savidan, of Auckland, the leadins distance man, and J Standen and D. Gray. Australian champion cyclists, were notable competitors in good times. Standen won the Half Mile, One and A-half Mile, and Three Miles, with Gray second in the first two, and Scarfe second in the lap race. Gray won the Mile Scratch with Standen second. Scarfe and Morris, of Wellington, and Wakeley, of Wanganui, were also prominent. Savidan was beaten decisively m the sprint home in the Mile ’riat bv seven vards bv R M'Donald of Palmerston North. M'Donald had a favourable mark, but earlier in the evening he had won the Half-mile. Palmerston North runners practically scooped the poo], the best of the Wanganui men being absent. 6 TAIERI AMATEUR CLUB. The annual meeting of the Taieri Amateur Athletic Club was commenced in fine weather on Saturday afternoon, but before the programme had been finished rain fell, and made things very unpleasant for onlookers as well as competitors. The three-mile bicycle race had to be abandoned, and some of the dancing competitions took place in the Taieri Lawn Tennis Club’s pavilion. The meeting was a successful one. The attendance was good, there was keen competition, and the officials ran the sports in a business-like manner. The Mosgiel Municipal Band. was in attendance, and supplied good music. Much interest was displayed in the half-mile walk, in which the champion, G. S. Cabot started from scratch. The

winner, R. Fraser, put up a very good performance. G. S. Cabot failed to get a place. A very popular competition was Norman Olliver. He won from scratch the local handicap (100yds), the 220yds handicap (from 20yds), and the 120yds Mosgiel Handicap (from 12jyds). For this latter event a cup was provided by the club, and this -was handed over by the Mayor (Mr Walls) in the coarse of the afternoon, amidst cheers from the crowd. Special mention should also be made of H. Magee, who won the local half-mile handicap from scratch. L. C. M'Lachlan ran a good race in the 880yds handicap, and deserved the win he registered. The one-mile handicap was run after the rain had cleared a little, and the grass track was slippery. The competitors were spread all over the track; but this was characteristic of most of the flat events in the afternoon. There was never a bunch at any time, and remarks about indifferent handicapping were frequent amongst the spectators. . Comments were also made about some of the competitors in the relay race not exerting themselves to the f-.illest. The cycling events were popular items with the spectators. Loud applause greeted O’Brien as he crossed the mark in the finaL of the one mile. More should be heard of this young rider, as he evidently possesses great staying powers on the track. The entries in the dancing events were not numerous. Miss Violet Paterson was judge, Mr Gibson supplied the pipe music, and Mr Gall was steward. As all the competitors were girls, the programme catering for them only, many remarked on the absence of young boys from the dancing platform, and wondered if the Mosgiel and Taieri lads had given up this art altogether. When presenting the cup the Mayor thanked the competitors and spectators—especially those from Dunedin—for the support rendered to the club, and he conFratulated the club on the success that I attended its efforts, and appealed to the public to continue its support, as the club, by encouraging sport in the town and district, was assisting greatly in a movement towards the better nealth of -the younger generation. The results of the various events were as follows: — Local Handicap, 100yds.—N. Olliver (scr) 1, A. M'Kegg (9yds) 2, G. Creighton (7yds) 3. Time, llsec. 880 Yards Handicap. Twelve starters — L. C.
