THE LAST RITES.

FUNERAL OF MR MARK COHEN. On Friday afternoon th e funeral took place, the cortege moving from the residence of his son-in-law, in Albert street, St. Clair, for the Jewish portion of the Southern Cemetery. The office-bearers of the Jewish congregation attended to the religious ceremonial. The service was conducted by the Dunedin rabbi, the Rev. A. A. Astor. The body of the deceased was cremated in Auckland shortly after death, and on Friday the urn containing the ashes was committed to the grave in the plot in which Mrs Cohen was buried five years ago. Citizens attended in large numbers to pay a tribute of respect. Among those following were Mr J. R. Rodgerson (son-in-law of the deceased) and his two sons; the Jewish community was represented by Messrs E. I. Halsted (president of the Jewish congregation), A. de Beer, J. Jacobs, J. Romison, J. B. Moss, and L. de Beer; the Evening Star Company by Messrs. W F. Alexander (representing Mr A. M. Burns, manager, Christchurch Press), C. Stanley Smith, R. P. Bell, F. E. Clapperton, jun., C. G. Smith, T. J Walker, J. G. Moody and W. G. Pickard ; and the Otago Daily Times and Witness Company by Sir George Fenwick, Messrs G. L. Denniston, W. Easton, and J. T. Paul. The cortege also included the under-mentioned gentlemen: Sir Charles Statham, Sir John Sinclair, Sir James Allen, Mr G. M. Thomson, M.L.C., Mr MacGregor, M.L.C., and Mr R. Scott, M.L.C., Mr T. K. Sidey. M.P., and Mr J. M. Dickson, M.P., Professor Dickie, Rev. P. B. Fraser, Dr M’Kellar, Dr Thom, son, Mr W. B. Taverner (Mayor of Dunedin), Crs D. Larnach, J. Wilson, J. J. Clark, and R. S. Black, Messrs T. Smith, J. Callender, W. R. Piddington, and L. Pope (St. Clair Bowling Club), G. A. Wycherley (Otago Cricket Association), T. Somerville (Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association), J. C. Somerville (South Island School Committees’ Association), E. A. Rosevear (vice-president Dunedin Chamber of Commerce), E. Sincock, W. Fels, S. Spragg, D. Wright. J. M. Gallaway, T. Scott, W. G. Wreaths were forwarded by the Speaker and members of the Legislative Council, the president and members of the Otago Women’s Club, Mr and Mrs Moritzson, the New Zealand National Council of Women, Mrs Charles Smith and Miss Smith, the Otago and Southland Newspaper Proprietors’ Association, Mr and Mrs W. H. Atack, the South Island School Committees, Mr Henry and Annie Raphael, the children of the Sara Cohen Memorial School, the Press Congress of the World, the St. Clair Improvement Association, the Free Kindergarten Association. Mr and Mrs J- J. Clark, the Evening Star proprietors, the Christchurch Press, the literary staff Evening Star, the Evening Post (Wellington) proprietors, the National Council of Women, the School Committees of Otago, Sisters Murison and Wix, Mr W. G. Pickard, and the Albion Cricket Club.
