Dealing on Wednesday night at Timaru with the policy of borrowing adopted by the Dominion, in the course of his address on “ The Public Finances of New Zealand,” Professor B. E. Murphy said that the public could not hope for a reduction in tariffs or income tax (reports the Herald). “ The present state of affairs had been brought about as a result of the extravagance demanded by the public, and which had been forced on every government for years past*. Tho blame did not rest with the Government, but with the people themselves.”
