Within the next six months there will be a general post in the railway service, and as a result probably 4000 officers in the various branches will have to be transferred (states the Auckland Star). As £25 per move would be a moderate estimate of the cost of transfer of a railway servant and bis family and his chattels, the moving bill this year will run into six figures. One suburban officer, who is going from the North Island to the far south, hns a total of 53 cases to be transported by rail and steamer. An interesting sidelight on the present unemployment position _in Auckland was provided by an advertisement . offering a position in a motor service station to a young man between 21 and 25. The proprietors received 300 applications. in person, by telegram, and by letter, and 203 applicants were interviewed. Telegrams were received from as far afield as To Awamutu. As' the hours of work were not attractive, being from 3.30 p.m. until midnight, the number of applicants shows that there are many young men seeking in vain far work of any description.
