A simple accident, but with tragic results to the sufferer, occurred recently when Mr E. Elliott, of Greenmeadows, an employee of the Hawke’s Bay County Council, whilst excavating at a bridge on the Taradale road, was struck on the eye by a piece of road metal, whirled. from the wheel of a fast-travelling motor car (says the Napier Daily Telegraph). So severe was the injury .that he had to be taken to Napier Hospital, awaiting au operation for the removal of the eye. Ernest Nelson Butler, married, with five children, a former nost il employee, pleaded guilty at Marton to the theft of a postal packet containing cheques to the value of £7, and also a £5 note. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. The accused stole the packet in November, and on the second day of the Manawatu races cashed one cheque in a T'hinamanls shop in Palmerston -North. Tire Chinaman formerly resided in Marton, and thus identified the accused.
