The Invercargill borough health inspector reported last Friday that scarlet fever was very prevalent in the town, 13 cases having been notified during the month of February (states the Southland Times). For the same period last year only one case was reported. The Government inspector for Southland (Mr E. Sinclair) stated that there were no cases in his district, which does not include Invercargill. A recent Greymouth visitor to the Riwaka district states that the tobacco and fruit crops there are good this year, while on the Westland side of the Nelson district neither are un to the usual average (says the Greymouth Evening Star). Two tobacco farmers at Riwaka took £2OO worth of tobacco (net) off three acres of land last season. This gives an indication of the profit to be had from tobacco culture.
