The State Forest Service’s nurseries at Hanmer and Balmoral are reported to be looking at their best now, despite the fact that the seedlings of some of the pine species were affected by the dry weather (reports the Christchurch Sun). A particularly encouraging feature is the exceptional “ strike ” of Californian redwood trees from imported seeds. The seeds are usually very hard to cultivate. Those at Hanmer were planted in the spring in virgin soil, and the seedlings are now 3in high.
