THE ESSEX MURDER
HEARING OF CHARGE RESUMED LONDON, February 28. At the resumption of the KennedyBrowne case, Mr O’Connor, counsel for Browne, drew attenton to the widespread publicity given to Kennedy’s alleged statement implicating Browne. Ihe magistrate feplied: “If the statement is the only evidence against Browne I will not commit him for trial The statement is not evidence against Browne.” The evidence was largely confined to witnesses detailing the movements of the car in the neighbourhood of the muraES 1 . Browne read a motor journal, and appeared disinterested Kennedy’s eyes were fixed on the ceiling. Inspector Barker described the discovery of a diity grey mask and a fancy dress in Browne s house, also a car license, of which Browne said : I hat is a dud license in case I was stopped ” Cross-examined, Inspector Bark . said that a few hours after his arrest Browne denied any connection with the murder. Giving evidence regarding Kennedy a arrest at Liverpool, Detective Ma’niesnn said that he recognised Kennedy when leaving a house which vas under observation Detective Mathieson calle out, “ Halloa, Bill, come on.” Ken -iy wheeled round and said: “ Stand back or T will shoot ” Detective Mathi on closed with Kennedy, who whipped out an automatic and thrust it into his ribs. He heard a metallic click, and gripped Kennedv’s arm and gave it a twist. =nmnL faneous’y striking him a blow on the face, partly upsetting Kennedv’s balance. Ho seized the revolver and thrust it >nto Kennedy's back, and marched him down the street, where other detectives weio concealed. At the nolice station Kennedy said that he had no grouch against the nolice, tint that Detective Mathieson should be in heaven.
