FORGED VOUCHERS.
BROTHERS’ NAMES SIGNED.
ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE.
CHRISTCHURCH, January 17. The brothers of John Roland Steven# owed him a sum of money, approximately £6O so he said, and he could not get ni.4 money from them. He resorted to sigh* ing their names to vouchers for royalties and the result was that this morning, in the Magistrate's Court, he faced two charges of forgery. It was stated in evidence that the forged vouchers con* cerned the Forest Hill reserve, some Native timber land in Southland. The accused had forwarded requests to the Native Trust Department in Wellington purporting to come from his brothers, and asking for a statement of the royalties. Proof of identity was apparently given satisfactory, and the royalties were signed and returned. The accused had admitted forging his brothers’ names to both the letters and vouchers. Stevens nleaded guilty, and was com: mitted to the Supreme Court for sentence:
