.While the members of a party of climbers were disporting themselves in a patch of snow a little on the New Plymouth side of Humphries’ Castle, a large stone bounded over a high cliff above them and landed only 20 or 30 j’ards away (relates the Taranaki Herald). While it is not probable that the stone was deliberately set in motion, the danger of such acts cannot be too greatly _ emphasised. The banana is a fruit which may be added to the already long list of those produced in the North Auckland district (states the North Auckland Times). For 50 years past 'Maoris at the Pukepoto settlement, near Kaitaia, have cultivated the palm, and trees are growing in several Whangarei gardens. Recently one family had the first bunch of the season, and, although the fruit was much smaller than the Island product, it was heartily enjoyed.
