WELLINGTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

January 20.

The Marania this week brought a number of Australian sportsmen. They included Mr Ken Austin, the well-known bloodstock auctioneer; Mr J. Whit-worth, formerly in business here, who has been settled as a ttainer at Randwick for the past 20 years; also Mr and Mrs John Scott, who have sold the Royal Hotel at Randwick, and after a holiday in the Dominion, start on a world tour in March next.

The Otago contingent* for Trentham put in an appearance here on Tuesday morning. The four days spell will give them a good chance to get pver the travelling before they are asked to race.

The local lightweight S. Wilson has finished his apprenticeship with H. B. Lorigan. and has taken service with H. Telford. One of his mounts here will be on Joy Bird in the Wellington Cup. Some of the Trentham contingent, including Royal Game, will be racing at Foxton; where it is considered not so hard to win a race as at Trentham. The judge’s position has been altered at Trentham for the forthcoming meeting. That official will be on the top of the official stand instead of on the first story as previously.

L. G. Morris, who generally showed up well in the highweight handicaps at Trentham, will this year be riding at Foxton, as he had only one mount on the opening day at headquarters. Booster, who won tbe big sprint event 12 ninths ago at the Wellington meeting, has again been galloping well since his arrival here.

Single Spear, back again at Riccarton, after a successful trip to Australia, is engaged on the concluding day at Trentham, and may be brought up. The colours of Lady Carroll were carried to the fore by Nahi (Cynic—Tatau Tatau) on tbe opening day of the Wairoa meeting. Sir James Carroll imported Cvnie. who won the Great Northern Hurdles, but has not been a success at the stud.
