At the Greymouth Jockey Club's District Committee meeting yesterday R. Morris, who was suspended by the Reefton Club for three months for interference with King Cheops in the County Handicap, was disqualified for the remainder of the 1927-28 season on the ground that the Reefton penalty was too lenient.

FORBURY PARK TROTTING CLUB.

A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Forbury Park Trotting Club was held on the 16th. The president (Mr B. S. Irwin) was in the chair, and the members present were Messrs W. Quirk, T. Fogg, R. Telfer, James Mitchell, A. G. Neill, T. Ritchie, W. J. L. Coughlan, G. J. ‘Barton, John Mitchell, and A. Clark. The Secretary of the Oamaru Jockey Club wrote thanking the club for its, assistance in connection with the trotting events at Wingatui. In spite of the bad conditions, the meeting had shown a small profit.—The letter was received. A telegram from the Trotting Conference notified the club that the change of date to January 27 and 28 had been agreed to. —The telegram was received. The appointment of Mr H. Griffiths as deputy racecourse inspector in place of Mr J. Torrance was reported to the club by the secretary of the New Zealand Racing Conference.—The letter was received.

Mr H. A. Griffiths wrote tendering his resignation as a member of the club, and requesting the transfer of his ticket to his wife.—lt was decided to inform Mr Griffiths that the rules of the club prevented membership tickets from being transferred.

It was decided to take out with the South British Insurance Company a £4OOO insurance cover against accidents to patrons through staff negligence or defects in the ways and works of the Forbury Park course. After a brief discussion it was decided to adhere to the proxy system of voting among members. “ Six months ago we undertook to consider the intrduction of a better system, but whenever another scheme is suggested difficulties present themselves at once,” said the Chairman. “We admit that the present system is liable to abuses, but no better has been evolved.”

CATTLE FLAT HACK RACING CLUB.

The committee of the Cattle Flat Hack Racing Club held a meeting at Balfour recently, when the secretary (Mr T. Condon) submitted a rough balance sheet of the recent meeting. The receipts totalled £224, and the expenditure (including £l5O in stakes) amounting to £194, leaving a credit balance of over £3O over the meeting. This year the stakes were increased considerably, and the very satisfactory credit balance was responsible for favourable comment on the management, and the hope was expressed that the club would soon obtain a totalisator permit, and thus allow the district people to enjoy a day s outing on similar lines to the larger centres. The secretary and treasurer were authorised to pay all the stakes and accounts.

Thirty years ago a Cambridge undergraduate asked his tobacconist to’procure for him a pipe the grain of which ran uniformly in the same vertical direction as the bowl. Such a thing is a freak among pipes, and out of 1000 turned out there may be only one with this peculiar characteristic; it is usually the result of the heart of tb e briar root happening to be exactly at the base of the bow] when the latter is fashioned out of the rough wood. The tobacconist at length found such a pipe, which he sold to th e student at the ordinary price. The latter’s friends, however, were so struck with the novelty that they overwhelmed the dealer with orders for ‘‘ straight grainers.” The demand for this kind of pipe grew steadily, and the makers set them aside whenever they appeared as rarities capable of realising fancy prices. lie Opunake district is at present experiencing a modified form of curfew, as owing to shortage of water the power board switches all lights off at 11.30 p.m. (says an exchange).
