Burnside. January 18. Fat Cattle.—About 284 head were yarded, comprising a few pens of prime heavy bullocks and a good proportion of medium quality, with a fair number of prime cows and heifers. The quality all round was fairly good. Owing to the large yarding prices from the commencement of' the auction were back about £1 a head on last week’s rates, and there was a further noticeable decline, towards the end of the sale. Fat Sheep.—A medium yarding of 1957 was penned comprising a good percentage of ewes. Ihe quality, taken all over, was much better than was forwarded for last week s fixture. Although there were not a great many pens of prime wethers forward, competition was not at any time keen, ana values for heavy wethers " receded from 2s to 3s a head on last week’s puces, but there was not such a decided diop on ewes, and sheep of this class can be quoted down about Is. Freezing buyers were operating for light wethers and ewes hence the regularity of the market for light sheep. There was only a small yarding of stock generally at Tuesday’s sale at the Waiareka yards. The whole of the sheep were centred in the fat pens, and the prices realised were as follows:—Fat lambs, 27s to 28s 9d; fat wethers, 27s to 30s; a pen of extra good fat ewes, 25s 9d. Only a small number of fat cattle were offered, and these sold at the following rates: —Fat steers, £l2 to £l3 ss; heifers. £6 2s 6d to £7; cows, £9. The offering of store cattle was the best that has been seen in the yards for a considerable time, the steers and heifers being of high-class quality. The range of prices was s follows: —Eighteen months to two-year-old steers. £5 15s! 15 months to 18-months old steers, £4 10s; yearling steers, £2 6s; 18-month-old heifers, £4 10s; 15-months-old heifers, £3 10s: calves, 21s. The dairy cattle consisted of only four head. A registered, pedigree Ayrshire stud cow just at calving realised £l4 ss: a heifer in milk, £3 7s 6d; a Jersey heifer, to calve in September next, £3 10s; another Jersey heifer, to calve earlier, £3 15s.
