At a meeting of the North Egmont Park Committee a discussion ensued with reference to the danger in dry periods of lighting fires near forests. It was stated that recently a farmer near Kaitake set fire to some fern, with the result that the forest reserve and -a plantaion of Taranaki Forests, Ltd., were in grave danger for some-time. But for the strenuous efforts of employees of the Forestry Company in beating out the fire, hundreds of acres of valuable bush might have been- destroyed, as well as young plantations. Members of the Park Committee carried a resolution expressing appreciation of the splendid services rendered by the Forestry Company’s employees in checking the fire, and so saving the bush in the National Park.
When, the East Coast-Auckland railway connection is made within the next 12 months, the fat lamb and frozen meat enterprise generally _in the Bay of Plenty , district should receive a powerful stimulus'- as it has been necessary in tlie past, for owners to arrange for the driving of their stock long distances to the nearest railheads at Rotorua or Waihi. Apart from the expense involved, the loss of condition on long drives has caused a considerable net loss upon the killing. For the past few seasons th" nosiVon has been made worse by the closing down of the work at Whukatane.
