ACTION OF POLICE CENSURED

CHRISTCHURCH, August 24

“I cannot understand the r lice keeping these men so long. The police should not have detained them in the room against their will. If the men would not make statements voluntarily they should not have been kept,” said Mr H. P. I« wry, S.M., this morning when he dismissed charges of being on licensed premises after hours against Angus Anderson, Frederick Anderson, and Harry Smith. From the evidence given it appeared that tho three men were detained in a room of the hotel for at least ar. hour and a-half while Sergeants M’Gregor and Macnamara took statements from them. It was also alleged that one of the men, Smith, was refused permission to see his brother-in-law, who was in the hotel, andthat on one occasion Sergeant Macnamara barred Smith passage from the room by placing his arm across the doorway. Sergeant M'Gregor, in evidence, said that this was incorrect. He lid not see Sergeant Macnamara stop Smith from going out. (.;■
