TAWA FLAT TUNNEL.

FIRST CONTRACT LET

WELLINGTON, August 24.

The Government has accepted a tender for the first contract in connection with the Tawa Flat tunnel—the construction of the bottom heading of No. 1 tunnel—and the successful tenderers are Messrs Burnside and Matthews, of Tangowahine, near Dargaville. A start will be made with the work at an early date, and it is understood to be the intention of the contractors to employ up-to-date machinery to avoid the necessity of loading the trucks by hand in the tunnel. The object of letting the contract for the bottom heading only is presumably to provide a ready method of discharge for the spoil from the second tunnel. The heading will measure 19ft hr 9ft. It is understood that the Public Works Department itself will arrange for the supply of the necessary tunnel timber for both tunnels early in the present month.
