INVERCARGILL, August 26. OATS.

During the week there has been a fairly constant inquiry, chiefly confined to northern brokers, for both B and under grade oats. A certain amount of business has been placed at varying figures, and it is pleasing to note that though parcels have been of small dimensions sales have been effected at local rates, B’s in at least one instance having sold at 3s 3d, f.0.b., s.i. It is notwithstanding that northern centres report buyers ideas at being nothing up to 4d per bushel less. There is a strong retail demand, which even extends to farmers for feed purposes. From the number of orders coming in from farmers, though rather too early to say anything definite, it seems that a fair area will be sown down in oats in Southland. CHAFF. Chaff is in its usual condition, no business being done whatever with outside centres. For the small local retail demand up to £3 10s per ton is being paid growers for prime quality on trucks, their siding. RYEGRASS. This market has shown considerable activity during the last few days. It has doubtless been brought about by conditions in the United Kingdom, the weather being of such a condition that it seems evident that seeds shortly will be over in low condition so that fair prospects of demand will arise from New Zealand seed. A fair amount of bookings has been made, and ir. some instances for seed of somewhat low germination prices ranging from 3s 6d per bushel of 271 b seed for germination of a trifle over 70 per cent, up to 4s for 281 b to 291 b seed with germination somewhat exceeding 80 per cent. In view of this business being distinctly of a speculative nature, it is difficult to decide for the moment whether such rates will continue. The market will remain firm, showing that a fair amount of business will be done with the United Kingdom in kindred seeds, white clover, cow grass, and Crested Dogstail. STOCK. The stock market is firm, with good demand for all classes. Fat cattle are offering fairly freely, and notwithstanding this the prices paid must be satisfactory to the vendor. Fat sheep are not so plentiful, and prices are high. Store sheep have firmed within the last few weeks, and all classes are inquired for. We quote:— Fat Cattle. —Heavy prime bullocks, £l4 to £l6 10s; medium-weight bullocks, £l2 to £l3 15s; lighter bullocks, to £lO 10s; prime heavy heifers, £lO 10s to £l2 10s; medium heifers, £8 to £9 10s; prime heavy

cows, £lO to £l2; ; ediunr-’cows, £7 10s to £9 10s; vealers. to 30s; runners, to £3 10s; prime ox beef, to 35s per 1001 b; heifer beef, 32s 6d to 35s per 1001 b; cow beef, to 30s per 1001 b.

Fat Sheep—Prime heavy wethers, 48s to 545; medium-weight wethers, 40s to 455; lighter wethers, to 355; prime heavy ewes, 35s to 40s; medium ewes, 25s to 30s; lighter ewes, to 20s. Store Sheep.—Wether hoggets, 21s to 245; ewe hoggets, 30s to 355; two-tooth wethers, 28s to 30s; four-tooth wethers, to 345; two-tooth ewes, to 40s; four and six-tooth ewes, 36s to 38s. Store Cattle. —Three-year steers, £8 to £9 10s; two-year steers, £6 to £7 10s; 18months steers, £4 10s to £5 10s; calves, £2 to £3; two-year heifers, £2 15s to £3 10s. OAMARU MARKETS. QAMARU, August 26. The condition of the Oamaru grain market has shown very ittle change since last week. The-straight-out business done with farmers for last season’s cereals has been negligible. A few clearing-up lines of wheat have been sold, but the parcels have been small and the prices have been regulated by quality. One or two transactions in oats are reported. A line of A grade Gartons sold at 3s 14d, f.0.b., s.i., which is equal to about 2s 6d per bushel on trucks. Fowl wheat has sold at from 6s 5d to 6s 6d per bushel, f.0.b., and one or two forward sales are reported at this price. There has been little movement in oaten sheaf chaff, the nominal value of which is about £3 10s per ton on trucks. Barley has been cleared, and potatoes are not offering. A few lines of cocksfoot seed have been under offer, but the ideas of value have been so wide anart that little business has resulted. The live stock market has not shown a great deal of activity, though one or two clearing sales have been held. Sales of light fat bullocks have been made at £l2 12s, and fat cows at £5 ss. Dairy cows have found buyers at prices ranging from £5 10s to £7 15s, and heifers coming to profit at from £4 10s to £5 10s. Two, four, and six-tooth ewes have sold at prices ranging up to 435. Full and faiilng-mouth ewes have realised 31s; fail-ing-mouth ewes, 265; and mixed-sex hoggets, 26s 6d. Paddock ewes for forward delivery have sold at 26s and hoggets at 32s 6d. There is still a good demand for young pigs.

NEW ZEALAND FARMERS’ UNION.

A meeting of the North Otago executive of the Farmers’ Union was held on Friday, there being present Messrs R. B. Meek (chairman), and nine members. The Chairman paid a warm tribute to the late Mr Duncan Cameron, who was past president of the union, and a vote cf condolence was passed to his relatives. It was also decided to place on record his services to the union. Mr Meek stated that Mr Cameron had done a great deal in securing separate status for North Otago. He was also a prominent member of the Dominion executive.—Mr William Forrester, a past president of the executive, also referred to the splendid services of the late Mr Cameron. He stated that the farming community did not know how much they owed to the deceased gentleman. He had proceeded to Wellington on numerous occasions at his own expense to do work for the farmers. —Mr J. G. Macdonald also spoke in feeling terms of the late Mr Cameron.

Accounts amounting to £lO 12s 6d were passed for payment. N.Z. Distributors, Ltd., wrote stating that a pamphlet entitled “Wheat for Profit” was available for distribution. It also asked for the names of wheatgrowers in the district.—Received. A letter was read from the Minister of Agriculture in regard to the exportation of potatoes, etc. The Government Statistician advised that his statistics in regard to the potato crop were merely of an interim character. The farmers were to blame for any inaccuracy, through wiving wrong information. The Chairman stated that cards had now been sent out to potato growers, asking for information. A mistake had been made in publishing the first statistics through the press. Mr R. B. Meek reported upon the business done at the Dominion Conference. He stated that he had fought the resolutions in favour of political action and protective duties, but both of these resolutions had been carried. Mr Meek said a resolution had been proposed that all members of the union should be bound to support the resolutions of the conference, but he had declined to be bound, and the resolution was defeated. The Secretary reported upon the business that had been transacted at the conference of secretaries of the union. On the motion of Mr Forrester, votes of thanks were passed to the president and secretary for the work they had done as delegates to the conference.
