A suggestion that chambers of commerce be represented at bankruptcy meetings was made by Mr E. J. Hallett at the recent meeting of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce (says the Dannevirke Evening News). Mr Hallett said that bankruptcy meetings were mostly farces; the usual practice was that friends of the bankrupt went ..long to the meeting and voted that his discharge be facilitated, and the bankrupt was white-washed. That was roughly the usual procedure. Mr Hallett went on to express his opinion that assignees should be permanent civil servants on fixed salary, irrespective of the amount of work done.
