PROTEST BY' AUCKLAND MANUFACTURERS. AUCKLAND, August 17. The tender of Messrs H. Edmonds and Company, Birmingham, England, for showcases for the Auckland War Memorial rJ>n S oA>! n ’ ias .' bet ’n ■accepted, the price being, £20,964 f.0.b., England. The show case#; of which about 550 are required, are to bo of glass in bronze frames. It is estimated it will cost £6OOO to land them in Auckland, bringing the price up to £27,000. A protest against the contract being Riven to a n English firm when the work could have been done in New Zealand at about the same price lias been made by the Manufacturers’ Association. It is pointed out that the tender of Thomas W. Parsons, of Auckland, was £27,183, or about equal, to the English price, plus insurance, freight, etc. The association considers that the contract should have been let locally, thus encouraging local manufacture, jiioviding work for Auckland artisans, and keeping at least the money for laoour in New Zealand. 'The contract would require the constant employment of 20 skilled men for 18 months at an average wage of £5 10s a week.
