KAWARAU GOLD.

PAST SEASON'S OPERATIONS. INDICATIONS OF RICH GROUND. . CROJMWEI.L. August 16. Mining on the Kawarau, as it has been carried on by the small number at work, has ended for the year. At 5 o’clock last evening the river at the town commenced to rise as a result of the opening of the gates nine hours previously. When the full effect of the opening could l>e judged it was seen that the river had risen between 6ft and 7ft above the lowest level in winter, ami it now reads 3ft on the gauge at the town. The low level is accounted for b the fact that all the feeders are very low. During the season's work Vogel’s Vision and the Natural Bridge Company were the most active on the lower 20 miles of river, although other local companies did some work. The results from the two companies mentioned were quite satisfactory, and leave 'hsolutely no doubt as to the richness of the river if tire water is further reduced. What steps will be taken to that end is still a matter for conjecture, but some proposals are likely to be made eaily. Vogel’s Vision with a small partv of men, won 360 z in three weeks, and a total of 450 z in five weeks, with the rich ground going into the water. The Natural Bridge Company, with only the manager at work, got splendid results at rnanv places on the claim, different weeks yielding 4oz to 6oz. In most cases the rich ground dipped into the river. Everything indicates that if the bottom can ever be cleaned parts of it will prove very rich.
