It was a cautious fight, both men standing off for most of the time. The decision met with a mixed reception. JOHN M'GLASHAN COLLEGE TOURNAMENT. The annual boxing tournament of the John M'Glashan College was held in the college Assembly Room on Saturday evening. With only one exception the bouts were well-contested and interesting from a spectator’s point of view. Begg had no difficulty in winning the senior championship, as in both bouts Fie obtained the decision in the first round. His weight and height, added to his powerful delivery and incessant attack, overwhelmed his lighter opponents, who, however, both fought gamely. The following are the results: —

First Group.

Greenslade 6.0 beat Walker 5.9. Auld 5.10 beat Ramsay 5.7. Final. Greenslade 6.0 beat Auld 5.10. Greenslade made use of his extra height and longer reach, and his footwork was good. Watching his opportunities, ho fought past the other boy’s solid defence, using both left and right to good advantage. In desperation, Auld attempted windmill tactics, but he could not penetrate his rival’s defence with his short reach, and at the close of the third round: his punches noticeably weakened. Second Group. Bernstein 6.2 beat M'Kenzie 6.10. Brown beat Dunlop by default. Semi-final. Bernstein 6.2 beat Brown 5.11. Drennan 5.10 beat White 6.8. Final. Bernstein 6.2 beat Drennan 5.10. Bernstein in this bout at times successfully employed feinting tactics. Many of the interchanges were even, but the winner has a strong attack and has very strong punches for a young boxer, Drennan boxed coolly and took plenty of punishment with apparently little effect. Towards tho end of the third round Bernstein’s wind was laboured, but he did not let up on th© attack, and fully deserved the decision. Exhibition Bout. Burnside 7.5 beat Boyes 7.10. Both boys being nearly the same weight, a very even contest resulted, and there was little to choose between the two. Each had an effective left, and from the first to

the third round neither weakened on the attack. In the second and third rounds both were evidently tiring with the pace. At the end of the third round Burnside delivered a staggering right to the jaw. Third Group. Riley 8.12 beat Hutton 8.12. Greenslade 8.5 beat Langford 9.1. Final: Not contested. In the bout between Hutton and Riley the first encounters were fairly even, but later Hutton tired, and Riley drove some hard rights, followed by lefts to his opponent’s head and face. Hutton near the finish put in a strong right to his rival’s jaw and drove him to the ropes. Riley, recovered and defended better. In the contest between Langford and Greenslade some interesting interchanges resulted. Langford had a short, snappy series of punches, delivered from both shoulders alternately. Greenslade used judgment and watched his opponent closely. He put in some heavy punches to his rival’s head and body, but tired quickly in the first and third rounds. Langford drove him on the ropes on ono occasion, but Greenslade boxed thereafter with more caution and more scientifically, and obtained the decision.

Senior Championship. Begg 11.5 beat Sidey 9.11. Shortt 11.2 beat Gray 9.11. F inal. Begg 11.5 beat Shortt 11.2. In the first bout against Sidey,. Begg .launched a terrific attack and three times in succession he drove his opponent through the ropes. He was declared the winner after the first round. Shortt had much the better of tho fight with Gray, his deliveries from both shoulders being very powerful. Towards the finish of tho bout Gray tired, and his punches lacked direction. In the final between Begg and Shortt, the latter delivered some well-directed and heavy punches, which Begg did not .ppear to notice. Begg then retaliated and launched a fierce and sustained attack which drove Shortt on tho ropes. Regaining his feet, he was shortly afterwards sent to the floor, and at the end of the first round Begg was declared the winner. He has tremendous power in the shoulders and is capable of a steady offensive ftcm bell to bell. The school gave three cheers for its new champion. Auld gained the award for being the most scientific boxer. Tho principal of the college, Mr C. M. Gibay conveyed the thanks of the eo'logo and the statf to the referees, Messrs Humphries and Davies, for their services, and he also thanked Messrs Allan and Twhigg for acting as judges. The college, hs said, was indebted to Messrs Oxley and M‘Donald (tho instructors) for tho excellent exhibition of boxing given by the boys.

PAYNE BEATS SQUIRES. SYDNEY. August 21. At the Stadium “Tiger” Payne knocked out Johnny Squires, heavy-weight champion of South Africa, in the first round. Payne fought wildly, missing frequently, but shortly before the end of the round he connected with a heavy right swing to the jaw and outed Squires.
