“Shellback” writes in the Auckland Star: “On a trip from Brisbane to Auckland in 1892, when we were about 250 miles north of Cape Maria Van Diemen, five small birds landed on the fore upper tops’! yard during the afternoon watch. They' were pipi.wharauroa, .or the shiningbacked cuckoo. After resting for about 20 minutes, they’ flew away. The skipper, who was alongside . the binnacle, went below to see the chart, and he found that the birds were making a direct line for Cape Reinga.”
