The Works Committee will report to the City Council at its meeting this week that at the request of the Otago Harbour Board authority has been granted to the engineer to proceed with the formation of Bauchop street on the harbour reclaimed land as an urgent measure. The estimated cost is £5280, the whole of which will be provided by lhe Harbour Board in the meantime. The half cost chargeable to the council is to be paid to the board when the council is in a position to provide for the amount in the yearly allocations. The expenditure was not provided for in the present year’s estimates.

In the Supreme Court on Friday probate was granted by Mr Justice Sim in the estates of the undermentioned deceased persons: —Patrick Bilton ? the elder, late of Blackstone Hill, farmer (Mr J. I. Fraser); Robert Finnic, formerly of East Taieri. but late of Dunedin, retired butcher (Mr Allan); Andrew Irwin, formerly of Ease Taieri, but late of CJydcvale (Mr Allan); Jessie formerly of Kaitangata, widow (Mr J. B. Nichol); Angus M’Pheo Marshall, late of Dunedin, medical practitioner (Mr T. C. Marshall) : and Elizabeth Lydia Stephens, formerly of Dunedin, but latterly of- Stoke, widow (Mr Webb’. Letters of administration were granted m the case of Emma Paine, late of Dunedin, married woman (Mr P. S. Anderson'.

With a view to testing the vitality of the earwig, a resident of the Upper Clutha, near Pembroke, recently carried out a test, with remarkable results (says the Cromwell Argus) On March 1 he placed two full-grown earwigs in a tobacco tin, with only a small hole in the top for air. He has guarded the tin carefully ever since and occasionally examined the prisoners. Just a week ago he opened the tin in the presence of some visitors and the two earwigs were iixely and frisky as ever. They had been absolutely without, food for just on five months, but evidently with little effect on iheir vitality.
