SERIOUS MOTOR SMASH.

CAUGHT BETWEEN TWO TRAMS. CHRISTCHURCH, August 11. As a result of being caught between two trams on the Riccarton road at .dusk this evening, a motor car driven bv a man named Meehan was badly battered, and the driver was taken to hospital unconscious, suffering from a nasty wound in the head and concussion. The passenger in the car escaped serious injury. The scene of the accident was at the bend in the road near the Hagley Park cricket grounds. Meehan, accompanied by a passenger, was proceeding from the racecourse to the city when he tried to pass an inward-bound tram on the bend. Evidently he did not see an outwardbound tram approaching immediately in front, and as they passed the car was caught between the two trams and was carried for some yards. On being extricated it resembled a concertina, being bent in from both sides. One side was stripped of its mudguards and* running board, while on the other side the front wheel was torn off, the remains of it, together with the front spring, lying a couple of yards away. The body of the

car was badly smashed, the hood torn, and the wind-screen shattered. The broken glass was scattered for a distance of 1-0 yards. The front seat was liberally bespattered with blood. The accident occurred just as all tho racegoers were returning, and a long string of loaded cars was held up for some time us a result of the smash.

It was reported from the hospital to-? night that the condition of Meehan wa4 satisfactory.
