OBITUARY.

A telegram from Auckland announces , the death of Mr John Henderson, at the ( age of Gl. The deceased was (Mayor of Devonport from 1916 to 1919. and had been a member of the Auckland Harbour Board since 1921. The death of Mr John ATAlahon, aged 94. formerly a sergeant in the Auckland Police Force, took place on July 31. He came to New Zealand from Ireland, and joined the Police Force in Dunedin. He was at a number of stations in the south , before he left the force, and became proprietor of an hotel at Westport. He later rejoined the force, and was appointed to Thames, and later transferred to Auckland, reaching the rank of sergeant. Tne deceased took a great interest m many branches of sport. He was an uncle or Detective M’Mahon, who recently retired. , , , The death of Mr J B. Sutton took place at Centre Bush on August 1. Mr Sutton was one of the best-known sheep faimeis in Southland, and his merino flock gamed prizes throughout New Zealand and Australia. He was also a first-class judge of horses and bred some noteworthy animals. ’ Deceased was an early member of the Riverton Racing Club, and did good work on the executive, being a strong supporter of steeplechasing. Ho was one of tile founders of the Birchwood Hounds, and rode regularly at the meets. He was also a capable farmer and a member of tlie various associations of Southland. The funeral of the late Air S. A. Hatton, whose death occurred at Palmerston North took place on Sunday afternoon. Hie lite Mr Patton, whose occupation as a commercial traveller brought him into touch with people m all parts of the Dominion, was of a kind ami generous disposition, and was widely esteemed. The impressive ceremonial services of the (Masons and Foresters were read at the graveside. Messages oi condolence were received from all parts ot the Dominion. Messrs C. W. Constable Smith, who was 4 vears of age, was well known in South Canterbury and Otago, having been stationed ’in both districts varying periods. He took charge of the St. Kilda Nation some three years ago, and remained there until his .retirement on superannuation in November last. IL Pope who organised and nursed through its formative period, and for long afterwards the Native schools’ system of New Zealand passed a wav last night at the home oi one of her sons, Air R. H. Pope, in her eighty-third year. Married to Air Pope in her late teens, she arrived with him at Dunedin when that city was still in its infancy, Mr Pope having received an appointment to the staff of the Otago High > School. years. Airs Pope had a large family connection in IVelli ngton. Ihe death has occurred of Mr John Sinton, aged 72, a veteran of the Maori r c ,. lul ‘l an °kl resident of Auckland. Mr Sinton was born in Jedburgh, Scotland, and came to New Zealand in the ship Kaniad. He saw considerable service in tne Maori Mar. He was engaged as a shipwright with the firm of Messrs Henderson and Spraggon for a period, and later was employed for many years by. the Al'Gregor Steamship Company, which was absorbed by the Northern Steamship Company. Air Sinton is survived by his wife, three sous, Mr J. Sinton, of Dunedin: Air G. Sinton, of Hobsonville, and Mr W, Sinton, of Auckland, and two daughters. Airs Al. Morris, of Auckland, and Mis Watson, of Birkenhead; 16 grand-children, and one greatgrandchild. The death took place at Mataura on Saturday week last of Airs Johanna Christie, wife of Air John Christie, formerly of Tuturau. The late Airs Christie was born in the Milton district 65 years ago, and was the second youngest daughter of the late Air and Airs John Raeburn, who came to New Zealand in the first trip of the ship Robert Henderson, landing at Port Chalmers. Tho family resided at Dunedin for some time, where the deceased was educated. She was twice married, on the first occasion to the late Mr Thomas >,ard at Trinity Church, Dunedin. She was left a widow at the age of 21 years with two young children, and about 40 years ago she was married again to Air John Christie at Broad Bay. Some 28 years ago Mr Christie and his wife removed to Inchclutha, where they resided for about 10 years, and about 19 years ago took up their residence at Tuturau. Four years ago they removed to Alataura, the sons taking over the farm at Tuturau. The late Airs Christie took a great interest in horticulture, and was a successful exhibitor at Alataura and Wyndham shows. She also acted as judge at several shows, and her decisions were always well received. Tho deceased was an active church worker, and tho Presbyterian Church benefited by her work in various branches, both at Tuturau and Alataura, particularly her work in the P.W.M.U. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to Mr Christie and family in their bereavement. The deceased is survived by her husband, two sons of the first marriage, Messrs \V. T. Ward (Waimate) and J. R. Ward (Edendale), and two sons by tho

second marriage, Alcssrs Alex, and J. J. Christie (Tuturau), and three daughters— Mrs G. Folster (Mataura). Mrs John APDonald (Edendale). and Aliss Margaret Christie (Alataura). The late Mrs Christie had been ailing for some years, but she bore her illness with fortitude, and the end camo peacefully. The interment took place at Alataura on Alonday.
