EXPLOSION IN FIREPLACE.
FAMILY’S FORTUNATE ESCAPE. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 5. A terrific explosion shattered the kitchen stove in Mr Percy Sampson’s house at Sentry’ Hill to-night, and flung portions of the stove about the room, and through the ceiling and a window. One piece injured Mrs Sampson’s leg. The explosion occurred when Mr Sampson placed a shovelful of coal on the fire. The three occupants of the room —father, mother, and son —had a fortunate escape from more serious injury. The coal was procured originally from Waikato, being bought, as usual, through the dairy factory. It evidently’ contained a detonator or some other explosive.
