THE TIMBER INDUSTRY.
DEPUTATION TO MINISTERS. WELLINGTON, August 5. A deputation from the Timber Workers’ Federation waited on the Prime Minister (Mr J. G. Coates), the Minister of Labour (Mr G. J. Anderson), the Commissioner of State Forests (Mr O. J. Hawken) to-day. The deputation suggested that further protection should be given against imported timber, and that the erection of houses with second and third grade timber should be permitted. Mr Coates said that timber was one of the natural industries of New Zealand, and one they had no intention of allowing to crash. The country was spending millions of money on afforestation, and soon they would have enough timber to carry * them right on for all time. The Government had no intention of allowing the millers to do exactly as they wished. He suggested that the members of the deputation should avail themselves of the opportunity to discuss the whole matter with the committee that had been set up. They were at a stage when they would be glad to have the assistance of members of the federation.
