CHRISTCHURCH COUNCIL.
BALANCING THE BUDGET. RAID QN ACCUMULATED PROFITS. CHRISTCHURCH, August 2. The Labour City Council of Christchurch, in order to balance its budget for the current year, has decided to use the accumulated profits of the Electric Light Department, amounting to £BOOO, and of the quarry account, amounting to £5OOO, a total of £13,000, having estimated the expenditure at something more than the current rate would yield. The alternative was to raise the rate from 3 3-8 d to 3 19-32 d. The council chose the alternative of a rate. The policy was opposed strenuously by the opposition party, but as this party numbers only five,, they were outvoted, and the estimates, with resolutions providing for the use of these accumulated funds, went through. The meeting lasted till 2 a.m. It is stated by the Labour Mayor and councillors that these appropriated moneys will be repaid as soon as possible. At the elections both parties were pledged not to increase the rates. SALARY INCREASES. By the passing of the estimates for 192?1928 the following increases in salaries were approved:—
The increases in pay will account for a total of £1716 14s. All of the proposed increases were adopted without alteration.
