RIFLE SHOOTING.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION MEET'S. WELLINGTON, August 1. The annual meeting of the executive of the National Rifle Association, over which Mr Marshall presided, decided to fire the same programme as last year, opening on February 23, so as to obtain better weather and fit in with the visit of the Australians, who are expected to come over for the Gordon Highlanders’ match, to be fired in New Zealand next year. It is hoped the Australian State teams will compete for the trophy. It was announced that, as mark 6 ammuniion is practically unobtainable, onlymark 7 be used at the meeting. Tests are being conducted, as a result of which it is hoped that a mark 7 will be produced that will give satisfactory results with the long rifle at short ranges. As sufficient first-class shots have announced their intention of going to New South Wales for the October meeting there, a New Zealand team will be entered for the Commonwealth and Gordon Highlander matches. W. N. Masefield will be captain, and, with E. Ballinger and D. Roots, will pick the team after practice on the Sydney ranges. Others at present announced as making the trip are:—W. Green. E. Vennell, H. Boon, R. Caughley, A. Powell, J. Carter, F. Sharland, S. Higgs, T. Goodall, A. Ballinger, A. Robertson, J. Drennan, J. Turnbull, C. Maney, W. Ballinger. The party includes the present New Zealand champion (Roots) and three former champions—Masefield, Vennell, and A. Ballinger.
