BOOKS DISCLOSE SHORTAGE.
COMPANY MANAGER ARRESTED.
CHRISTCHURCH, August 5. William Ray MacDonald, former manager of the Guardian Assurance Company in Christchurch, was arrested to-day by Detective E M Thomas on a charge of theft. MacDonald was charged this afternoon before Mr E D. Mosley, S.M., that on or about January 12 he stole £5O in money, the property of the Guardian Assurances Co., Ltd. ( A remand was granted until next Friday.
Chief Detective Lewis said that MacDonald was a single man. He had held the position o f manager oi rhe company in Christchurch. On information received auditors investigated the books and found a shortage of £6’i>9. Of that sum about £4OO had been refunded, but there was still about £250 not accounted for. Bail was allowed in the sum o f £3OO and one surety of £3OO,
