STEWART ISLAND WHARF.
INVERCARGILL. August 2. A definite step has at last been taken by the Marine Department towards the construction of the new wharf at Stewart Island. Authority has now been given for the purchase of the necessary timber. In a letter received by the Southland League from the Minister of Marine (Mr G J. Anderson), it is stated that the Minister understands that the whole of the cost of the work will be borne by. the Government, and that an item for the additional amount necessary will appear on the current year’s Estimates. In the meantime authority has been obtained for the purchase (out of the grant provided by the Marine Department) of the necessary tirnber for the extensions to the wharf, and instructions have been given for some of it to be procured as early as possible.
