For the first time on record, it is believed, the New Zealand amateur billiards championship, which is to be commenced at the Federal Club, Wellington, next week, will not have a representative from ihc South Island. H. G. Siedeberg, of Dunedin, the well-known all-round sportsman, who won the Dominion championship in 1916, 19.17, 1919, and 1921, and has competed on several other occasions, h-s not entered this year, owing to his eyesight being affected ; an old Christchurch competitor, W. Smith, as turned professional, and a member of the Christchurch Police Force, Detective Bickerdyke, a very capable exponent, is also an absentee. Other notable absentees are Fredatovich, of Auckland, who won in 1924, and Valentine, of Auckland, who held the honour in 1912 and 1913.

The entries have just closed, 11 beimr received, four from Auckland, six front Wellington, and one from Petone. The competitors and draw are as follows:—(1) A. Freeman (R.S.A., Wellington) v. E. J. Morrison (Auckland Amateur Sports Club); (2) A. Fowke (Wellington), a bye; (a) J. E. Spencer (Federal Club, Wellington) v. W. N. Tucker (Federal, Wellington); (4) E. V. Roberts, champion (A.S.C.) v. P. Devine (Petone W.M.C.); (5) E. Bromley (Wellington Civil Service) v. E. W. Warren (A.A.S.C.); (6) W. E. Hackett, (Auckland) and H. J. Shanks (Wellington W.M.C.) meet in the second round. SWIMMING. CHAMPIONSHIP DATES FIXED. CHRISTCHURCH. August, 4. The council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association to-night approved the dates for the 1928 New Zealand championships to l>e held in Dunedin from January 11 to January 27. both inclusive. WRESTLING. KILONIS BEAT THYE. MELBOURNE, August 7. Kilonis defeated Thye on points, each securing one fall. OTAGO HUNT CLUB. MEET AT WINGATUI. The Otago Hunt Club held a most successful meet at Wmgatui on Saturday afternoon over the property, of Mr W. Rennick, to whom the club is once more, indebted. Indeed, it is property-owners of Mr Rennick’s type who enable the club to carry out the functions for which it ' was formed. The afternoon proved fine, but there was a decided touch of winter in the air, and this, together with the attraction of the football match at Carisbrook, affected the usually good attend-

ance of spectators. However, those who did turn up got a splendid view from Gladstone road of a good exhibition of jumping. The number of followers was also small owing to several horses being in Christchurch for the National, and also several having completed their qualification run. The run was a much shorter one than that held at Sea View a fortnight ago, but consisted of eight good jumps, which were mostly gorse hedges. The hounds, which have now turned into a very fast pack, were sent off on tho trail shortly after 3 p.m., and were followed by some dozen or mere riders. All cleared the first jump well with the exception of Dandy, who unshipped his new rider, Mr Fraser, who was not hurt. The old horse, not to be deprived of his afternoon’s sport, cleared the rest of the jumps without his rider. Considering the, heavy state of the ground after a week’s rain the jumping on the whole was exceptionally good. A much improved jumper is Tornado, who has been schooled over the jumps at the Kennels, since being brought down from the Waimatc district by his owner. Mr 11. S. Jones. After the run was over several of the members had a jumping competition over three flights of hurdles the best performances being those of Jimmy and Felix, who were both ridden by Miss E. Smythe, and Tornado, who was rid len by the Deputy Master (Mr N. Murdoch). Fabriano, who has just been purchased by Mt Fred Shaw, was out putting in his first qualification run in expectation of competing in the Hunters’ Hurdles at the Hunt Chib’s race meeting next month. Among thoe following were the Deputy Master (Mr N. Murdoch), on Jimmy, who was in charge of (he run; Huntsman (M. Shine), on John Peel; whip (D. O'Connell), on Felix; Miss E Grecnslade on Sunshine, Miss E. Smythe on Miss lima. Miss Al. Statham on Red Rata, Messrs J. Walker on Andy. E. Olsen on Wallflower, D. Kerr on Fabriano, J. Fraser on Dandy, H. S. Jones on Tornado, S. M‘Kay on Malaya, and J. Crawford on Decision.
