WAIAREKA SALE.

The sheep offered at Tuesday's sale at the Waiareka yards consisted of five pens of fat wethers. Some of these of extra quality brought 455, while prime reached 425, and lighter sorts tapered down to 34s 6d. The chief feature of the cattle entries was found in the fat pens. Here were offered nine heifers sent up from Stirling, and these realised from £lO 15s to £ll 12s 6d. An extra prime cow brought £ll ss. Some good fat cows realised from £7 to £8 15s, and light cows, from £4 to £6.

The only store cattle offered consisted of a line of small mixed-sex yearlings which realised 395.

The dairy section was fairly well represented. Best cows just at profit brought from £8 to £9, and aged cows coming to profit from £4 5s to £5. Some Jersey heifers from two years upwards sold at from £5 to £7 10s, and a line of Jersey cross heifers realised an average of £5. There was a large yarding of pigs.' and prices were back somewhat, tho nge being as follows: —Best slips, 40s to 41s 6d; medium slips, 29s to 335; best weaners, 20s to 22s 6d; medium weaners, 15s to 17s ; small weaners, 3s 6d to 10s.

WALLACETOWN STOCK SALE. INVERCARGILL, August 2. The fortnightly stock sale was held at Wallacetown to-day, a firm market being the outcome. The attendance was an average one, and the yarding, though numerically smaller than for a considerable time past, comprised some stock of excellent quality, and the sale throughout was a good one. The fat sheep yarding was about equal in numbers +" that of the previous sale, and prices at the opening were quite up to those ruling a fortnight ago. The demand eased slightly towards the finish, and, in the concluding stages, values showed a moderate decline, but on the average, the previous market's rates were maintained. In the fat cattle section the number was about 90 fewer than the yarding on July 19, but the stock forward was considered the best seen at Wallacetown for several months, and the sale was a spirited one. Prime heifers, particularly, were dearer, and, as the sale progressed, an improvement in prices was noticeable all round. The store sheep yarding contained a few’ pens of failing-mouthed ewes and a line of very nice ewe lambs. The yarding of fat sheep was of average quality, consisting chiefly of butchers’ wethers, together with a few pens of exceptionally heavy sheep, and two or three pens of ewes. There w’ere two pens of fat lambs forward, and these were disposed of at late market rates. A pen of heavy wethers sold at 55s 3d; good butchers’ wethers from 36s to 40s; and lighter sorts down to 335. Prime ewes realised up to 29s 6d, and lighter sorts from 24s to 27s 6d. Prime lambs sold up to 27s 9d, and lighter sorts down to 235. The yarding of store sheep was small, consisting, with the exception of a pen of good ewe hoggets, mostly of aged and inferior ewes. These ranged in price from 3s to 14s, while the hoggets brought 27s 6d.

i ADDINGTON MARKETS. CHRISTCHURCH, August 3. To-day’s Addington market was the annual“. National” which attracts the best of stock from ail parts of the South Island and the lower half of the north. There was a very fine display of sheep, but, though the best cattle .seen in the yards for a long time were offered, their number was much smaller than usual. Show cattle sold at barely commercial values, but fat sheep met a very hot sale. There was a heavier entry of store sheep, mostly hoggets, and free competition was the rule. A particularly good sale for ewe hoggets resulted, a line of Corriedales making 33s 3d, and halfbreds 375. Some early-dropped spring lambs (April) were offered, and averaged from 25s to 455, while a few eight-weeks-old lambs made up to 40s 6d.

For a double market there was a comparatively small yarding of fat sheep, and it proved that the supply was not equal to the demand. Apart trbm the entries of special sheep, there was a fair proportion of prime lines, supplies being drawn from North and South Canterbury, from the North Island, and from Southland. The special lots brought good prices, but there was not exceptionally keen competition for ordinary lines at the opening of the sale, but later on the market became a very hot one and prices soared above anything ruling this year. The advance was 6s to Ifa per head. Extra prime ethers realised bos to bds; prime >ve f • ers, 45s to 52s 6d; medium wethers, 36s 6d to 445; light and nferior, 27s 6d to 35s 6d. Special ewes to £3 7s; extra prime ewes. 45s to 48s 6d; prime ewes, 37s 6d to 44s 6d; medium ewes, 30s to 375; light ewes, 25s to 295; aged and inferior, 21s to 245. Though there were several exceptional drafts of fat cattle forward, tho general exhibition of r*iow beef was not up to the standard of past “Nationals.” The entry, all told, comprised 630 head—not a heavy penning for a double sale. The entry included drafts from the Rangitikei district of the North Island, from South Otago, Southland, the West Coast, and South Canterbury. It was apparent from the outset that the fancy prices which have marked most “Nationals” in recent years were not to be paid. To-day the showcattle made less per 1001 b than ordinarily good beef. On an average, the advance approximated 2s 6d to 3s per 1001 b for better quality. The top price of the day was £4O for a massive Shorthorn bullock, sold on account of Mr W. Lochhead (Balclutha), a first prize-winner at the recent Dunedin Winter Show. On that occasion his live weight was 31801 b. Much the primest draft seen in the yards for many years was from the Hunterville district of the North Island, the vendor being Mr T. A. Duncan. There were 10 in the line, and all were well-bred Shorthorns, and as even as peas. They probably would dress from 14501 b to 15001 b on an average, and sold at the very reasonable price of £23 9s 6d, the top pen of two making £24 7s 6d. No doubt their weight tended to depress competition, but it was a striking line, apart from the show cattle, which sold comparatively cheaply considering their quality. The prices per 1001 b were:— Extra prime heifers, to 465; prime heifers ■ and extra good ox beef, from 41s to 44s 6d; medium quality beef, 36s 6d to 40s; heavy beef, 33s to 375; unfinished beef, 32s to 355; rough beef, 25s to 27s 6d. The following were the values of showbullocks: —£21 to £25; a special at £4O; prime heavy-weight bullocks, £l7 10s to £2O 10s; medium-weight prime steers, £l5 to £l7 15s; ordinary quality light steers, £ll 10s to £l4 10s; light steers, £8 to £11; extra prime heifers, to £l6 17s 6d; prime heifers, £l2 to £l4; medium heifers, £8 to £ll 10s; lighter, £5 to £8 10s; ■extra prime cows, to £l5 17s 6d; prime cowk, £lO 15s to £l2 15s; ordinary cows, £8 to £lO 10s; light cow-s, £5 to £7 10s. Good vealers sold under keen competition. Twelve to 18 months calves made £7 10s; good vealers, £5 10s to £6 10s; medium vealers, £3 15s to £5 ss. There was a nondescript entry of store cattle, consisting mostly of cows and bulls. The former made to £4 ss,- and bulls to £5 10s.

There was a slacker market for dairy cows, best second to fourth calvers realising £7 to £8 ss; medium, £5 to £6 15s; inferior, £3 to £4 15s; heifers, £5 to £B. The fat pig entry comprised a few pens of special stuff, the entry of big choppers being small. There was an easier tendency in the sale. Choppers made from £3 10s to £8 10s; baconers, £3 5s 6d to £4 15s. The average price per lb was 5Jd to 61d. Porkers made 42s to 63s 6d. The average per lb, 7d to 7Jd. There was a keen sale for a large entry of store pigs, weaners realising 18s to 23*s 6d; slips, 22s to 28s 6d; stores, 31s to 445. SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. (From Oub Own Correspondent-) INVERCARGILL, August 5. GRAIN. Oats.—Offerings from growers for some time have been infrequent, while export business has also been restricted with the execution of orders taken some little time prior. During the last fortnight sales have been few and far between. The reason for this is not far to seek. Seekers of A grade oats arc in small compass, and holders of these, knowing the position, are holding at 3s 6d, f.0.b., s.i., at which price sales have taken place to both Sydney and Melbourne. On the other hand, northern buyers are offering 3s 4d and 3s for this grade, which is not acceptable locally. Hence the only business being done is in undergrade oats or A grade oats, which have been sold not as A’s, but as sample, in some instances better prices than for A’s.

Chaff.—Growers are offering in sufficient quantities for the demand of the local retail trade. Shipping is quite impossible from Bluff to northern centres, and the basis of values is £3 10s per ton, on trucks, to buyers for prime quality. Nothing lower meets with any response from buyers. Ryegrass.—No business worthy of mention has been done with outside centres for some considerable time. The demand for spring sowing will soon set in, and merchants anticipate a revival of interest in this ere long Chewings fescue stocks are now mostly disposed of overseas, nominal value for this purpose being round about 78s, f.o.b. Crested Dogstail.—The position of this

market at present is somewhat uncertain, but nevertheless the market is somewhat firm with a forward tendency. Values for shipment overseas are from Is Id to Is 2d per lb for machine-dressed seed of high germination and purity, f.0.b,. Bluff. STOCK. The stock market in Southland is very firm at the present time for all classes. The yarding of fat sheep at Wallacetown on Tuesday was smaller than the average, and a good sale resulted, prices being up to those of the previous sale with a very firm tone. Fat cattle were as hardly forward in as large numbers, and the quality being good, .values showed a slight advance on last sale. Store sheep arc selling well, and each week sees an advance in prices, which makes one wonder if our overseas markets warrant the money being paid. Store cattle are making good money, and young steers are inquired for. Fat Cattle. —Prime heavy bullocks, £l4 to £l6 10s; medium weight, £lO 10s to £l2 10s; prime heavy heifers, £9 to £lO 10s; medium, £7 10s to £8 15s; prime heavy cows, £8 15s to £lO IQs; medium, £6 to £7 10s; vealers, to 30s; runners, to £3 10s; prime ox beef, to 32s 6d per 1001 b; heifer beef, 30s to 32s 6d; cow beef, to 27s 6d. Fat Sheep.—Extra prime heavy wethers, to 55s 3d; prime heavy, 45s to 48s; medium, 36s to 40s; lighter, 32s 6d to 34s 6d;prime heavy ewes, 30s to 355; medium, 25s to 28s; lighter, to 28s; medium, to 245.

Store Sheep.—Wether lambs, 20s to 22s 6d; ewe lambs, 28s to 30s; extra good lambs, to 33s 6d; ewes, 36s to 40s; four and six-tooth ewes to 37s 6d; soundmouth ewes, 30s; failing-mouth ewes. 22s 6d to 255; aged ewes, 16s to 20s; poorer sorts, to 10s. Store Cattle.—Three-year steers, £7 10s to £8 15s; two-year, £5 10s to £5 10s; yearling steers. £3 10s to £4 10s; calves, 35s to £2 103.

OAMARU MARKETS.

(From Our. Own Corres-ondent.) OAMARU, August 5. The past week has shown uo improvement upon previous weeks so far as the grain market in North Otago is concerned. Practically the whole of the cereal has been marketed. One or two small lines of Tuscan have been placed, and a straight line of velvet was marketed at 7s 3d per bushel. Oats are not in evidence to any extent. One parcel tof under-grade Gartons was sold at 2s Id per bushel on trucks. The barley market is bare, all milling varieties apparently having been placed. Oaten sheaf chaff has been sold at £3 15s per ton, on trucks. There is nothing to report in regard to potatoes. The whole of the local supplies have been dealt with. The position in regard to live stock shows little change. There is a strong inquiry for hoggets, but few are offering, while fat sheep are practically unprocurable. Ewe hoggets have sold during the week at 30s, two-tooth ewes at 375, and old ewes at 12s Cd. Fat wethers are worth up to 40s. The transactions in ox beef are few and far between, and the local butchers have to depend largely upon outside markets. Beef is worth 40s per 1001 b, heifer beef 355, and cow beef from 22s 6d to 255. There is an increasing demand for good dairy cows, but few are offering. Prices range from £6 to £lO, according to quality. ' Pigs are still in request, and weaners are fetching from 20s to 255, and sometimes more.
