WEDDING RING STOLEN.
CHRISTCHURCH. August 2.
When his cousin showed Huikai Re'iu her wedding ring the Maori remarked that he would have to get one like if. He got the same one. Rehn was charged before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., this morning that at Dunedin on July 7 he stole a gold ring valued at £2, the property of Pani M'Kay. “How do you plead?” Rehu was asked. “I plead guilty to pawning the ring.” Chief Detective Lewis said that that was a plea of guilty of theft because Rehu had no right to pawn the ring. The Chief Detective went on to say that the man went to his cousin’s place and said that he was getting married. She showed him her wedding ring, and the accused said that he would have to get one like it.. Two days later his coasin missed her ring. Subsequently the accused went to a pawnshop in Dunedin and got 10s for the ring. Rehu had served a term of three months’ imprisonment at Paparua.
“Rather a bad list, Rehu,” said the Magistrate. "He has got some time to serve yet, hasn’t he?” “About six weeks to go, I think, sir,” replied the Chief Detective. Rehu was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months.
