Within a very short time all carriages attached to ••press trains on the North and South Island lines will be fitted with attachments by which a passenger can, in, cases of extreme emergency, stop the train The fitting, which is precisely the same as that at present fitted in the guard’s vaa on all main line trains, consists merely of a small lever, enclosed in a glass-fronted cabinet. Anyone wishing to stop tile train breaks the glass and turns the lever town, which immediately releases the air .n the Westinghouse reservoir and applies the brakes. Several ivs have already been fitted, and the Railway Department expects to have the installation completed in all main line carriages by the end of the month.
