Writing in the Auckland Star, “Shellback” says: “In the ’nineties the barques Earl of Leicester and Denbigh Castle wero on the loading berth at Lyttelton for London, and, as there was not enough cargo for the two vessels, the masters drew lots. The master of the Denbigh Castle won, and the Earl of Leicester sailed in ballast to Newcastle. She loaded coal for San Francisco, and, after taking a cargo of grain to England, returned with general cargo to New Zealand.
